How we work
If you feel that you or your child would benefit from Occupational Therapy or if you have been referred, you can WhatsApp (0661116281) or email (info@kiaraot.co.za) us to book an appointment or discuss any questions you may have.
Once an appointment has been made, all relevant documents will be sent to you for the assessment. The assessment also includes an interview with the parent/caregiver to gain more in-depth information. The assessment duration depends on the type of assessment done as well as the reason for referral. If necessary, the assessment can be conducted over more than 1 session.
Once the assessment is complete, a therapy report will be sent to you within 7 working days. A feedback session will be organised along with the therapy session.
Therapy sessions usually occur weekly, on the same day and time.

Understand
As society demands more from our kids, we understand that each child is unique and benefit from the right kinds of attention.
Equip
Understanding is only useful if we know how to respond to these kids. So we aim to equip not only the child but parents as well.
Have Fun
We all learn better when we enjoy what we are doing. That is why all our sessions are steeped in fun and joy.
Celebrate
Every challenge overcome and every milestone reached is a reason to celebrate as we see the future grow before our eyes.
We strive to create a fun, safe environment where children can grow, explore and thrive.
Hippotherapy
Hippotherapy is a therapeutic intervention strategy in which the movement of a horse is used as part of an intervention plan and is carried out by Occupational Therapists, Physiotherapists and Speech Therapists.
The term "hippotherapy" comes from the Greek word "hippos," meaning horse. In hippotherapy, therapists utilise the horse's unique, rhythmic and multidimensional movement to provide sensory and motor input to clients. This movement stimulates the rider's muscles and nervous system, enhancing balance, posture, coordination, and core strength.
Sessions are tailored to each child or adult's needs, with therapists adjusting the horse's gait, direction, and speed to achieve specific therapeutic goals. Hippotherapy is especially beneficial for individuals with conditions such as cerebral palsy, autism spectrum disorder, Down syndrome, developmental delays, and other neurological or physical challenges.
Unlike recreational horse riding, hippotherapy is conducted in a clinical setting and forms part of a broader treatment plan. The therapist works closely with the client, often alongside a horse handler, to ensure safety and maximise therapeutic outcomes. Activities may include riding in different positions, reaching, stretching, or engaging in playful tasks on horseback, all designed to strengthen physical abilities and support communication and social skills.
Hippotherapy can also foster emotional wellbeing, confidence, and motivation. The bond between the client and the horse, along with the natural outdoor environment, provides a unique and engaging experience that encourages participation and progress.
Adult Occupational Therapy Services
We support adults seeking functional, emotional or work ‑ related rehabilitation through:
Dialectical Behavioural Therapy
DBT (Dialectical Behaviour Therapy) informed Occupational Therapy combines evidence-based mental health strategies with practical daily living skills. We help clients develop coping mechanisms for stress, manage difficult emotions, and improve relationships. Sessions may include mindfulness exercises, skills training for distress tolerance, and support with establishing healthy habits, all tailored to individual needs. This approach is particularly beneficial for adults dealing with mood disorders, anxiety, or those seeking greater stability in their emotional lives.
Functional Capacity Evaluations (FCEs)
FCEs are detailed evaluations designed to measure a person's physical and cognitive abilities in relation to work demands. We use standardised tools and real-life tasks to assess strength, endurance, flexibility, and task performance. The results inform decisions about a safe return to work, identify any necessary accommodations, and guide rehabilitation plans. FCEs are useful for those recovering from injury or illness, ensuring readiness for employment or identifying areas needing further support.
Equine ‑ Facilitated Occupational Therapy
Equine-Facilitated Occupational Therapy leverages the therapeutic relationship between clients and horses in a natural environment. Activities are tailored to support emotional healing, self-confidence, and physical wellness. Clients may engage in grooming, leading, or riding horses, all under the guidance of a therapist. These sessions promote mindfulness, reduce anxiety, and foster a sense of grounding. The connection with the horse and the outdoor setting help clients develop trust, improve communication skills, and strengthen the bond between mind and body. This therapy is suitable for adolescents and adults seeking a unique, holistic approach to personal growth and rehabilitation.
